Complete Skin Check
Our full skin checks are comprehensive, non-invasive full body skin examinations that are designed to detect precancerous and cancerous skin lesions to facilitate early management.
These are recommended to be done annually, with some higher risk patients returning for more frequent examination. We use specialised dermoscopy equipment to examine each mole and skin lesion to assess for risk of malignancy or precancerous changes.
Dermoscopy is the practice of examining skin lesions under a microscope. We use both digital and non-digital dermoscopy equipment with a variety of equipment available for different body areas.
Biopsy of suspicious lesions and treatment of precancerous lesions can occur in the same appointment. Skin lesion removals are generally done in a separate procedural appointment and will be booked in following your consultation and skin check.
FAQs
-
A full skin check takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.
This appointment type is designed for a comprehensive annual check to be completed for most patients on an annual basis. A full skin check is a head to toe examination, excluding under undergarments (these areas can be examined at your request with your consent).
-
A spot check is designed to review 1-2 skin lesions and takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. This appointment type is designed for existing patients whom have a new or changing skin lesion that requires review.
-
Prior to your skin check please look at your skin, scalp and the areas under the undergarments and note anything of particular concern that you may wish to mention to your doctor. Please do not wear any makeup, artificial tan or nail polish to your appointment. This is so your doctor is able to fully examine your skin. Please arrive 10 minutes prior to your appointment time to complete new patient onboarding if not already completed, and to remove any makeup.
-
During your skin check, your doctor will give you privacy to undress down to your undergarments. You will be asked to lie on the examination couch and your doctor will perform a thorough skin examination using a dermatoscope to examine individual skin lesions. If you have a particular skin lesion of concern please inform your doctor, and areas under undergarments can be examined at your request.
Any suspicious skin lesions will be identified and discussed with you at your check appointment. Your doctor will then discuss management or biopsy options with you. These can include short term monitoring of the lesion, partial biopsy or complete excisional biopsy (a sample is taken to be sent for specialist pathological examination). Simple biopsies (punch or shave) can be completed at the time or your appointment. Complete excisional biopsies will be scheduled on a procedural list after discussion with your doctor.
-
After a skin check appointment you may be required to schedule in for a skin lesion removal or further treatment, which will be arranged following your appointment.
In some cases a simple biopsy may be taken during your skin check. You will be required to attend the clinic for the results and for further treatment if required.
In cases where your doctor has advised monitoring you may be advised to rebook for another skin check in a certain time frame.
